Dr. Sanjar Umarov Granted Amnesty

In mid-November the Mid-South Chapter received word that an international tracing and welfare case we had been working on for over four years would soon come to a joyous close.

Dr. Sanjar Umarov, a physicist who had emigrated with his family to Germantown, TN in 2002, and had been imprisoned when he had returned to his native Uzbekistan in October of 2005, and had since been designated a "prisoner of conscience," was released and returned home to his family.

"We are extremely grateful to the American Red Cross Mid-South Chapter for the support it gave our family as we worked to secure the release of our father, Sanjar Umarov, from imprisonment in Uzbekistan for more than four years.  In November 2009, the government of Uzbekistan granted amnesty to our father on humanitarian grounds, just in time for Thanksgiving.  No words can express the joy we experienced and the appreciation we feel for the assistance that the Red Cross and so many others provided us in bringing him home.  We would specifically like to thank Rosemary Cook of the Mid-South Chapter who stood by us and gave us encouragement even in the darkest days.  She will never be forgotten by our family.”

"Freezer 5K" A Success!

Over 200 hardy souls turned out for the 2nd Annual "Run for the Red 5K" last weekend, running in below freezing temperatures in support of fire awareness and support for victims left homeless by residential fires.

Emcee, Joe Birch, news anchor for WMC-TV, also braved the cold to run along side Memphis Runners Track Club (MRTC) members, a Navy contingent from Millington Navy Base and fire fighters competing in the "race-within-a-race," the "Firehouse Challenge"
